Barranca del Cobre (Copper Canyon)
Barranca del Cobre, also known as Copper Canyon, is one of the most fascinating canyons in the world.
The 65,000 square kilometer (25,000 square mile) Copper Canyon is a group of six separate canyons in the Sierra Madre Occidental in the southwest of the state of Chihuahua in northwest Mexico. The Rio Fuerte, which is made up of all six rivers, flows into the Gulf of California. The name of the canyon comes from the copper/green color of the canyon walls.
Hiking, biking, driving, or riding a horse are just a few of the various ways you can discover Copper Canyon. The most popular way is by train, as the Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico or ChePe, runs along the main canyon called Canyon Urique, between Chihuahua and Los Mochis, on the Gulf of California.
