A tendency towards nostalgia and a clearly retro bent have become common in music trends over the past few years, both in newly generated music and in older songs that have been given new life decades later.
Due in major part to Tik Tok’s virality, older songs have recently made a comeback on the charts. Industry insiders have dubbed Tik Tok “the new MTV” since it expands the audience for classic songs and creates trends utilizing both audio and visual media. As a result, record labels are now intensely focused on promoting their music on the social media giant.
Why classic music will survive longer than the most recent works
They are never boring
There’s no way someone couldn’t sing along to the oldies when they play and everyone sings along while some remember the good times when the song was so popular.
Not trashy at all
If you truly listen to what the artists are singing, today’s music is quite vulgar. Typically, it isn’t really kid-friendly. The beat may be catchy, but the language and the underlying message are typically not.
It’s something that everyone can relate to
At basically every wedding my family attends, “Sweet Caroline” always ends up coming on more than once. And why? Because every person of all ages loves it. Even if there’s a 60-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy dancing out on the dance floor, they both know it and join in together because it’s one of those oldies everyone knows.
In uncomfortable circumstances, music can be an icebreaker.
Music is essential to effective communication no matter how uncomfortable the circumstance, whether it be at a wedding, family reunion, or even a get-together at someone’s house. Older music should be played to draw in more people.
While new music all sounds the same, old music is unique.
All new, popular music shares a similar beat, pace, style, etc. The originality of each song is what makes classic music so special. Many modern songs have a similar sound, most likely as a result of borrowing another artist’s style. The style of old music reflects the artist’s individuality and personality.
